Wailua River & The Fern Grotto

Wailua River

The Fern Grotto is accessed via the Wailua River which is part of the Wailua River State Park. It is a short drive from Kapaʻa town, located on the East side of the island. There are daily boat tours that will take you on the Wailua River or you can rent a kayak and paddle two miles up the river. Once there, you will enter a cave with limestone walls and ferns that elegantly drape the entry. According to the legend, it is a sacred place for Hawaiian royalty. It was also a romantic place where young lovers would go to pledge their commitment to love one another.
