Hanalei Pier
The iconic Hanalei Pier is located on the north coast of the island. The base of the pier is located on Black Pot Beach Park, the name given as fishermen would cook the dayʻs catch in a black pot on the beach for the community to share.
The pier was originally built back in 1892 and used to unload goods that were brought in by ship to Hanalei Bay. Over the years the wooden pier was reinforced with concrete and used to bring in cattle. Eventually a shed roof was added at the end of the pier. As the years past, the pier became a place where people would meet and gather, fishermen would sit on the pier with a line in hopes to catch a fish or two. It is a popular spot for taking photos as well because of the beautiful natural backdrop. The pier has also been featured in some Hollywood movies.
In 1992, Hurricane Iniki devastated much of the island as well as Hanalei Pier. The pier had to undergo major reconstruction. Today, the pier remains a gathering place for many and is listed on both the Hawaiʻi and National Registers of Historic Places.
